About this item: This serenely beautiful personage comes from the Gonja people of northern Ghana. Rich textures cover the symmetrical features, achieved through applications of aluminum repoussé and white clay. By Sefah Mohammed, it is a type of mask once used by the Queen of northern Ghana as a symbol for a staff of unity among people of the Gonja Kingdom. About our Artist: 'My work is very unique because I craft African masks of extremely high quality. Moreover, I have innovated some creativity into my art with local available resources, such as calabash and cowries,' says Ghana's Sefah Mohammed. 'There are a lot of factors that motivate me but the significant one is to depict the uniqueness of African history for our younger generations. I have trained a lot of carvers who are still carving and making ends meet for their families.'
